Looking for help with today's NYT Connections Sports Edition? Here are all the hints and answers for Sports Edition #539 on March 16, 2026.
What Is NYT Connections Sports Edition?
NYT Connections Sports Edition is the sports-themed variant of the popular NYT Connections puzzle, published on weekdays by The Athletic — the subscription-based sports journalism site owned by The New York Times. It challenges players to group 16 words into four categories of four, with each group sharing a hidden sports-related theme. Categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is easiest, green is medium, blue is hard, and purple is the trickiest. You get four mistakes before the game ends. Unlike the main Connections game, Sports Edition doesn't appear in the NYT Games app but can be played in The Athletic's own app or for free online.

- 🟨 Yellow (Easiest): Something you do with the ball to a teammate — a term used across multiple sports
- 🟩 Green: Types or formats of fantasy sports leagues
- 🟦 Blue: Members of a famous MLB franchise from New York
- 🟪 Purple (Hardest): First names only — think signal-callers currently starting in the NFL. Watch out for misdirection here; these look like everyday words
Today's Connections Sports Edition Categories — March 16, 2026
Here are the actual category names:
- 🟨 Yellow: PASS
- 🟩 Green: DESCRIPTORS FOR FANTASY LEAGUES
- 🟦 Blue: NEW YORK YANKEES
- 🟪 Purple: FIRST NAMES OF NFL STARTING QBs
Full answers:
- 🟨 PASS: Assist, Dish, Distribute, Give
- 🟩 DESCRIPTORS FOR FANTASY LEAGUES: Dynasty, Keeper, Redraft, Rotisserie
- 🟦 NEW YORK YANKEES: Fried, Gil, Judge, Rice
- 🟪 FIRST NAMES OF NFL STARTING QBs: Baker, Drake, Jordan, Lamar

Today's puzzle had a great misdirection baked in from the start. The words FRIED and RICE sitting in the grid almost beg you to hunt for a food-related category — but both belong firmly in the New York Yankees group, referring to pitchers Max Fried and Eddie Rice alongside Aaron Judge and new manager Cesar Gil. The purple group was the day's real challenge: BAKER, DRAKE, JORDAN, and LAMAR are all first names of NFL starting quarterbacks (Mayfield, London, Love, and Jackson respectively), but without last names attached, each one could easily be mistaken for a musician, a basketball legend, or just a common first name.
Tips for Solving Today's Puzzle
- Don't trust your gut on the food angle — FRIED and RICE are both current New York Yankees, not ingredients for tonight's dinner. Always question the obvious connection before committing.
- Think jersey numbers, not just names — the YANK works because JUDGE, FRIED, RICE, and GIL are all current members of the roster, so if you know the team well, this one becomes a gift.
- For the purple group, think football first names — BAKER (Mayfield), DRAKE (London), JORDAN (Love), and LAMAR (Jackson) are all active NFL starters. The trick is stripping away everything except their given names.
- Sort your fantasy knowledge by format — DYNASTY, KEEPER, REDRAFT, and ROTISSERIE are all distinct league styles that fantasy sports players will recognise immediately, making green a good early solve if you play fantasy.
