What Is NYT Connections Sports Edition?

NYT Connections Sports Edition is the sports-themed variant of the popular NYT Connections puzzle, published on weekdays by The Athletic — the subscription-based sports journalism site owned by The New York Times. It challenges players to group 16 sports-related words into four categories of four, finding the hidden theme linking each group. Categories are colour-coded by difficulty: yellow is easiest, green is medium, blue is hard, and purple is the trickiest. You get four mistakes before the game ends. Unlike the main Connections, it doesn't appear in the NYT Games is playable in The Athletic's app or free online.

Today's puzzle is particularly timely: it's Selection Sunday, and the categories are built around the NCAA basketball tournament.

Hints for Connections Sports Edition #538 — March 15, 2026

Not ready for the full answers? Here are gentle category hints:

  • 🟨 Yellow (Easiest): Think about rule violations on the basketball court — the kinds refs call all the time.
  • 🟩 Green: These words all come before a second word to name a stage of the NCAA tournament — but only the first word is here.
  • 🟦 Blue: These people lead women's college basketball programmes at the highest level.
  • 🟪 Purple (Hardest): These teams earned their spot in the 2026 Men's NCAA tournament — and some might surprise you.

Today's Connections Sports Edition Categories — March 15, 2026

Here are the actual category names:

  • 🟨 Yellow: BASKETBALL FOULS
  • 🟩 Green: FIRST WORDS IN NCAA TOURNAMENT ROUNDS
  • 🟦 Blue: WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL COACHES
  • 🟪 Purple: TEAMS QUALIFIED FOR THE 2026 MEN'S NCAA TOURNAMENT

Full answers:

  • 🟨 BASKETBALL FOULS: Block, Charge, Hold, Reach-In
  • 🟩 FIRST WORDS IN NCAA TOURNAMENT ROUNDS: Elite, Final, Second, Sweet
  • 🟦 WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL COACHES: Auriemma, Close, Ivey, Staley
  • 🟪 TEAMS QUALIFIED FOR THE 2026 MEN'S NCAA TOURNAMENT: Gonzaga, High Point, Queens, Troy

Today's puzzle had plenty of misdirection baked in. The green category — first words in NCAA tournament round names — was the sneakiest: ELITE, FINAL, SECOND, and SWEET are all common English words that could plausibly slot into other sports categories. SECOND in particular might have tripped players up, as it reads more like a time reference than a round name (Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, Final Four, Second Round). In the purple category, HIGH POINT, QUEENS, and TROY may have looked like generic nouns rather than team names to anyone unfamiliar with mid-major college basketball programmes.

Tips for Solving Today's Puzzle. Don't treat ELITE, FINAL, SECOND, or SWEET as standalone adjectives — in today's puzzle they're all paired with a missing second word that names an NCAA tournament round. Thinking of the full phrase (Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, etc.) makes the connection obvious.
  1. The purple category rewards NCAA bracket knowledge — GONZAGA is well known, but HIGH POINT, QUEENS, and TROY are smaller programmes that earned at-large or automatic bids. If a team name looks too obscure, that's a clue it belongs here.
  2. BLOCK, CHARGE, HOLD, and REACH-IN are all basketball fouls — don't let HOLD or BLOCK pull you toward a different sports context like American football or swimming.
  3. For the blue category, think women's college basketball coaching royalty — AURIEMMA (UConn), STALEY (South Carolina), CLOSE (Notre Dame), and IVEY are all prominent head coaches in the women's game.

Don't feel discouraged if today's puzzle stumped you. A brand new Connections Sports Edition resets each weekday, and we'll have fresh hints and answers ready.
