Hints for Connections #1008 — March 15, 2026

Not ready for the full answers? Here are gentle category hints:

-🟨 Yellow (Easiest): Think about taking exclusive or dominant control of something — it's all yours.

  • 🟩 Green: These are mechanical components you'd find inside a clock, bike, or engine.
  • 🟦 Blue: These words were each formed by blending two existing words together into one.
  • 🟪 Purple (Hardest): Each of these words can follow "bull" to make a compound word or two-word phrase — but watch out for misdirection.

Today's Connections Categories — March 15, 2026

Here are the actual category names:

  • 🟨 Yellow: GREEDILY CONTROL
  • 🟩 Green: TOOTHED WHEELS
  • 🟦 Blue: PORTMANTEAUX
  • 🟪 Purple: BULL ____

Full answers:

  • 🟨 GREEDILY CONTROL: Bogart, Corner, Hog, Monopolize
  • 🟩 TOOTHED WHEELS: Cog, Gear, Pinion, Sprocket
  • 🟦 PORTMANTEAUX: Blog, Motel, Smog, Spork
  • 🟪 BULL ____: Dog, Doze, Frog, Horn

Today's puzzle had some clever misdirection baked in. "Pinion" is the trickiest word in the green group — many players may try to link it to the purple category thinking of a "bull pin" (bullpen), but it's actually a small toothed gear. Similarly, "hog" could easily read as an animal connection, yet it belongs firmly in yellow as a verb meaning to greedily control or take more than your share. "Blog" and "smog" look like they might rhyme their way into the same trap, but both are genuine portmanteaux: "blog" from "web log" and "smog" from "smoke" and "fog."

Tips for Solving Today's Puzzle

  1. Start with portmanteaux if you know your word origins — once you identify that blog, motel, smog, and spork are all blended words, the blue group locks in quickly and removes four tricky tiles from the board.
  2. Don't let "hog" fool you — it looks like it belongs with animals, but in this puzzle it's functioning as a verb alongside bogart, corner, and monopolize, all meaning to greedily seize something.
  3. Work out the toothed wheels mechanically — cog, gear, sprocket, and pinion are all specific mechanical terms for interlocking toothed components, even if pinion is the least familiar of the four.
  4. For the purple "bull ____" group, say each word aloud with "bull" in front — bulldog, bulldoze, bullfrog, and bullhorn all click initially seem out of place.
