What Is NYT Connections Sports Edition?
NYT Connections Sports Edition is the sports-themed variant of the popular NYT Connections puzzle, published by The Athletic ā the subscription-based sports journalism site owned by The New York Times. It challenges players to group 16 words into four categories of four, each sharing a hidden sports-related theme. Categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is easiest, green is medium, blue is hard, and purple is the trickiest. You get four mistakes before the game ends. Unlike the main Connections puzzle, Sports Edition does not appear in the NYT Games app but is available in The Athletic's own app, or free to play online.

Hints for Connections Sports Edition #548 ā March 25, 2026
Not ready for the full answers? Here are gentle category hints:
- šØ Yellow (Easiest): Think rec room, not playing field ā these are games you play around a table
- š© Green: All four words are names from the same iconic athletic footwear brand's lineup
- š¦ Blue: These four names are all legends who wore the same MLB jersey
- šŖ Purple (Hardest): Each word completes a well-known two-word phrase beginning with a famous basketball league's initials ā watch out, some of these words appear in other sports contexts too
Today's Connections Sports Edition Categories ā March 25, 2026
Here are the actual category names:
- šØ Yellow: GAMES PLAYED ON A TABLE
- š© Green: NIKE SHOES
- š¦ Blue: GIANTS GREATS
- šŖ Purple: NBA ____
Full answers:
- šØ GAMES PLAYED ON A TABLE: Air Hockey, Foosball, Pool, Snooker
- š© NIKE SHOES: Air Force 1, Blazer, Pegasus, Shox
- š¦ GIANTS GREATS: Bonds, Mays, Ott, Posey
- šŖ NBA ____: All-Star Game, Cup, Draft, Finals
Today's puzzle had several well-placed traps. The yellow category is deliberately casual ā Air Hockey, Foosball, Pool, and Snooker are rec room staples rather than traditional sports, which can disorient players expecting every group to have an athletic angle. In the green group, BLAZER stands out as a misdirect because it doubles as the nickname for the Portland Trail Blazers NBA team, tempting players to place it elsewhere. The purple category is the trickiest of all: FINALS and DRAFT are used across countless sports leagues, making it genuinely difficult to commit them to NBA ____ without hesitation.
Tips for Solving Today's Puzzle
- Lean into the non-sporty yellow group first ā Air Hockey, Foosball, Pool, and Snooker are all games played on a flat table surface. If a word feels too leisure-focused to belong in a sports puzzle, that's exactly where the yellow group likes to hide. Identifying this group early clears the board significantly.
- Focus on the Nike brand for the green group ā Air Force 1, Blazer, Pegasus, and Shox are all iconic Nike sneaker lines. The word BLAZER is the biggest trap here since it's also an NBA team name, but in this puzzle it belongs firmly in the footwear category alongside the other Nike shoe models.
- Use baseball knowledge to lock in the blue group ā Bonds, Mays, Ott, and Posey are all San Francisco Giants greats. Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, Mel Ott, and Buster Posey represent some of the most celebrated names in Giants franchise history. If you know your MLB Hall of Famers, this is one of the easier groups to confirm.
- Treat the purple group as a process-of-elimination finish ā All-Star Game, Cup, Draft, and Finals all follow "NBA" to form official league event names. CUP is the sneakiest word here because it's far more commonly associated with football or hockey trophies, but it does exist in an NBA context. Once the other three groups are solved, this one falls into place cleanly.
