Hints for Connections #1010 — March 17, 2026

Not ready for the full answers? Here are gentle category hints:

  • 🟨 Yellow (Easiest): Think of phrases people use when something goes wrong — you're in one of these
  • 🟩 Green: These are foundational concepts from music class
  • 🟦 Blue: These objects all have something dangling or attached by a string
  • 🟪 Purple (Hardest): Words used as stand-ins for extreme speed — watch out for misdirection, as several of these could also fit other categories

Today's Connections Categories — March 17, 2026

Here are the actual category names:

  • 🟨 Yellow: METAPHORS FOR TROUBLE
  • 🟩 Green: MUSIC THEORY CONCEPTS
  • 🟦 Blue: THINGS WITH STRINGS
  • 🟪 Purple: METAPHORS FOR QUICKNESS

Full answers:

  • 🟨 METAPHORS FOR TROUBLE: Bind, Hot Water, Jam, Pickle
  • 🟩 MUSIC THEORY CONCEPTS: Key, Pitch, Scale, Tone
  • 🟦 THINGS WITH STRINGS: Balloon, Kite, Tea Bag, Yo-Yo
  • 🟪 METAPHORS FOR QUICKNESS: Arrow, Lightning, Rocket, Wind

Today's puzzle was a real head-scratcher, particularly the purple group. Words like PITCH, SCALE, and KEY are so strongly associated with music that the green category feels relatively straightforward — but JAM is the sneaky one, since it's also a musical term. Players who know their band rehearsals might wrongly pull JAM into the green group, when it actually belongs with BIND, HOT WATER, and PICKLE as expressions for being in trouble. The purple group is where most players will stumble: ARROW, LIGHTNING, ROCKET, and WIND all work as speed metaphors, but ROCKET and WIND could easily tempt you toward other categories entirely.

Tips for Solving Today's Puzzle

  1. Watch out for JAM in the green group — it's a music term too, but here it belongs with BIND, HOT WATER, and PICKLE as expressions for being in a difficult situation. Lock in yellow first.
  2. The green group is your anchor — KEY, PITCH, SCALE, and TONE are all core music theory terms. If you're confident here, start with green to clear the board.
  3. For the blue group, picture what you'd hold by a string — BALLOON, KITE, TEA BAG, and YO-YO all have strings or are suspended from them. It's a literal, visual category hiding among more abstract ones.
  4. Don't let ROCKET or WIND fool you — the purple group is about figurative speed ("quick as lightning," "gone like the wind"). Once you've placed the other 12 words, these four should fall into place.
